Our clean wood-residue biochar is always high temperature, ranging from 600 to 800 °C. This ensures very low bio-oil residues and makes our organic Black Bear biochar highly stable, and excellent for long-term carbon removal.

We recommend the <2 mm and 2-6 mm particle size for gardening applications, and our >6 mm, is recommended for water filtration and soil reclamation applications.

WHAT IS BIOCHAR?

Biochar is a soil amendment which has been used to improve agricultural productivity since the time of Pre-Columbian Amazonians. Biochar is a solid form of highly concentrated organic carbon. By first inoculating the biochar with nutrients, micro-organisms and moisture from quality compost and then adding it to your garden bed, you will improve soil health and provide nourishment for plants.

The cell structure of biochar provides storage units for the inoculants which the plant’s roots can access when required. Biochar is also a form of atmospheric carbon sequestration due to its very stable nature. Studies have shown that biochar remains stable in the ground for thousands of years.

1.  BENEFITS of adding inoculated biochar to your soil

2.  HOW TO INOCULATE or charge biochar with nutrients, moisture and micro-organisms

Biochar can be inoculated by simply mixing it into your compost at a 1:1 ratio. Let the biochar charge for at least 14 days before adding the mixture to your soil.

3.  HOW TO BLEND inoculated biochar into your soil

Once the biochar has been inoculated, it is ready to be blended into your soil. Add a 2cm - 10cm layer of biochar on top of your garden bed in the spring and work it into the soil to a depth of 20cm. We recommend a 10cm layer for poor soil.

4.  BENEFITS of mixing biochar and compost 

Mixing biochar and compost provides benefits to both. Your compost will inoculate the biochar and make it ready for your soil. However,  the biochar will  have the following positive effects on your compost:

  • Accelerates decomposition by increasing microbial activity

  • Reduces odor

  • Reduces nutrient and moisture losses
